What the Heck is a Marketing Funnel?

It's a lot like a traffic cop, as it leads your reader to your most wanted responses. He or she may use a whistle, a flashlight, a flag, or emergency lights but their goal is to make you go where they want you to go.

What does traffic have to do with a web site?

Everything, because the traffic we're concerned about here is coming from search engines, provided your site pages are optimized well enough to generate traffic. Either your indexed pages or other internet advertising when done right causes a reader to click on a link to your site.

On their arrival, without direction, your reader will go to the first thing that catches his or her eye. Remember, they have likely not been to your site before and have no idea where to go first.

How can you direct traffic with a web site?

I need your attention here to explain it!

  1. Scroll up the page a little and look right under my logo for the words Free Offers - Services - Resources - Site Map - Home
Also look left and down and see the Article Index all the way down to Contact Us.
  2. Use your mouse to hover over any of those words and notice they turn red and underline. That change tells people that is a link to follow, the words say what it is they will find.
  3. Notice that the red or blue colors turn to white on the title of this article to tell you where you are. The rest stay blue until hovered or clicked on, which indicates other places to go.
  4. Hover your cursor over any text link below on this page and notice the message that appears.
  5. These items plus what your text says will direct your readers to your most wanted responses.

Because we humans are taught to read top to bottom and left to right
, the areas I just pointed out are your most valuable pieces of web site real estate. The order of these links and words are critical as readers tend to click in order presented. In this way you are directing traffic.

Now that your reader has landed where you want them to, what do you do next? Talk directly to them, it's not about you. Ask or better still tell them what you want them to do.

Also use text links to send them to the next page, next subject, or action you want them to take. Do it like this:

At this point you should have a good idea
what a marketing funnel is and does. If not, I say again my free consultation will answer your questions.
